In the early stages of the game, you will rely on trains to trade with your neighbours and friends. It is only when you expand to a nearby river or shoreline, that you can build a port and start trading with ships, rather than railways.

Because every coin counts in the lower levels of the game, you will want to make as many coins as you can when trading. Although it is true that trading does not get you much profit, in comparison to farming and collecting from businesses, it does become a vital component when you level up and the game expands to sea trading. Get used to making good deals with train trading, so that you are prepared for mass cargo trading with ports later on.

One of the tricks you need to learn about when trading with multiple friends at a time, is how much money you make per item that you sell, and how long it take for the transactions to be completed.

The quickest transactions per friend, is when you choose to sell to three friends in one go. It amounts to 1 hour 20 minutes per friend for the transactions to be completed. When you buy from ten friends at once, it takes almost 5 hours per friend to complete the sale. Clearly, if time is important, go for buying from three friends at a time. Buying from four or six friends, takes two hours per friend, which is the medium option.

To maximise your profits per item that you sell, it really pays to sell to three friends at a time. You make a total of 2 coins per item sold. Selling to four friends, earns you 1,75 coins per item. Selling to ten friends at time, only earns you 1 coin per item sold.

Clearly, the only reason you would sell to 10 friends at a time, is to unload the maximum number of items in one go. Bear in mind the low return in coins and the ultra-long time it takes to complete the sales.
